Taiwan’s Oldest Symphony Orchestra to Celebrate 80th Anniversary on World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.

The National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO)—Taiwan’s oldest symphony orchestra, founded in 1945—will celebrate its 80th anniversary on October 27, coinciding with the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. The event will feature a series of performances and activities showcasing the orchestra’s eight decades of artistic excellence and cultural contributions, tracing the course of Taiwan’s musical development.

In recent years, the NTSO has placed increasing emphasis on the preservation of its historical documents and musical archives. In addition to establishing a comprehensive Concert Programs Database, the orchestra has launched the “NTSO Archives Homecoming” initiative, encouraging the public to donate valuable historical materials related to the orchestra’s legacy. A special donation ceremony will also be held as part of the anniversary celebration, reflecting the orchestra’s commitment to historical preservation and cultural continuity.

Among the most representative donations are the orchestra’s first concert program following its founding and what is currently the earliest known complete audio recording of an NTSO performance—captured on September 15, 1962, in a live recording when then-director Dai Cui-Lun conducted pianist Li Fu-Mei in a performance of Beethoven’s Emperor Piano Concerto. These archival treasures not only document the orchestra’s early journey but also stand as invaluable testimony to the development of classical music in Taiwan.

Looking back on its 80-year history, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra has consistently played a pivotal role in Taiwan’s modern musical landscape, growing alongside society and the times. Looking ahead, the orchestra will continue to serve as a bridge between history and the present through music, carrying forward eight decades of brilliance and allowing its music to resonate and flourish across Taiwan.
