Xi Xiang Ji / Way Down West (China, 1927) on Eye Film Player.




To celebrate the WDAVH 2025 with the global community, Eye Filmmuseum is publishing a free and globally accessible link to watch the Chinese silent film Xi Xiang Ji (Way Down West) with a new score by the students from the HKU Music and Technology department, performed by the Keuris Ensemble conducted by Henry Kelder. The film is presented wih French intertitles and optional English and Dutch subtitles.
Following the premiere in Shanghai in 1927, Way Down West was sold to Paris and then distributed across Europe — in Geneva, Berlin, London, Madrid, and Amsterdam — in a “heavily abridged European version.” It is this version that entered Eye Filmmuseum’s collection via the Nederlandsche Filmliga, who presented the film under the title The Rose of Pushui. In 1992, Eye created a new Color restoration that preserving the original tints of the nitrate print.
