Preserving film archives and passing on cinematic heritage is the noble mission of the China Film Archive. This year, we received a generous donation from the family of Qian Xiaozhang and Zhang Jianzhen — pioneering figures in the founding of New China’s film industry. The collection includes photo albums, manuscripts, letters, and audiovisual materials. Beyond their personal significance, these items serve as precious artistic records that bear witness to the journey of Chinese cinema through times of war, forming an essential part of our nation’s collective cultural memory. To mark this year’s World Day for Audiovisual Heritage , we will host the event “ A Partnership Through Flames: The Qian Xiaozhang and Zhang Jianzhen Film Collection Donation Ceremony ,” alongside screenings in Beijing and Suzhou of Homesick (1935) — Mr. Qian Xiaozhang’s first edited film. Directed by Shen Xiling and produced by Mingxing Film Company , the film weaves a rich, fluid narrative centered on the ...

Announcement of the Polish Film Heritage List.

Image
The creation of the Polish Film Heritage List was guided by the idea that cinema is not merely a spectacle, a commodity, or even a collection of canonized masterpieces. It draws inspiration from such unique initiatives as the National Film Registry of the U.S. Library of Congress and the Vatican Film List, established to mark the centenary of cinema. The List, created by the National Film Archive – Audiovisual Institute (FINA), aims to highlight films that have played a special role in shaping Polish culture, imagination, and collective memory. It also serves as a reflection on the history of film technology — including pioneering and technologically unique works, from the surviving recordings made with Kazimierz Prószyński’s camera, through experimental films, to those documenting the evolution of cinematic craftsmanship. The selection encompasses both canonical and lesser-known titles: feature films, documentaries, animations, experimental works, student and amateur productions, a...

Today, on October 27th , the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage is celebrated around the globe — a day that draws attention to the importance of preserving films, television productions, sound recordings, and other forms of audiovisual creativity . To mark the occasion, the film heritage platform Arkaader delights its friends with a newly restored Estonian film classic: director Peeter Simm’s first feature film, the legendary “ Ideaalmaastik ” ( The Ideal Landscape ), has been digitized and restored — and is available to watch for free today. In the early 1950s, Komsomol activist Mait Kukemeri is sent to the countryside to speed up the spring sowing campaign. The collective farmers, led by chairman Tuvike, are in no hurry to start work — the low fields are still too wet, and there isn’t enough seed grain. Meanwhile, superiors in the city demand results. The young sowing commissioner must find a solution, by fair means or foul, and during that bright and tumultuous spring he learns ...
